| Organization: | Kiwa Water Research, The Netherlands |
| Summary: | Kiwa Water Research is a leading independent and objective international knowledge institute for water, drinking water and related ecological and environmental aspects.
Kiwa a creator and broker of knowledge, focused on these tasks:
Water quality and health always are keys in performing these tasks. Kiwa Water Research is also a ‘consultants consultancy’ and often assists collaborating partners in serving their own customers, for example by providing second opinions and quality assurance.
Laboratories
Kiwa Water Research has three fully equipped laboratories, respectively for chemical analysis, microbiology and research into materials (e.g. research into plastics and corrosion). These laboratories are able to develop new detection methods and specialised measurement techniques for other laboratories. To provide companies with an insight into their own analytical performance vis-à-vis other providers, Kiwa Water Research also organizes interlaboratory comparisons.
International knowledge network
Kiwa Water Research co-ordinates research agendas and maintains close links with various respected knowledge partners in the and other countries. These contacts, often based on formal memoranda of understanding, allow Kiwa Water Research’s customers access to a worldwide knowledge database. Customers can therefore make an efficient and conscious choice between purchasing existing knowledge and arranging for new knowledge to be generated.
International Research Network
Kiwa Water Research cooperates with international partners within and outside the water industry and contributes significantly to the international knowledge infrastructure concerning (drinking) water supplies. Kiwa’s network comprises partners such as the Global Water Research Coalition (GWRC), the American AWWA Research Foundation, EWRI, the European platform of water research centres and various European cooperative ventures that carry out joint research for the European Union (EU). Kiwa Water Research is, for example, initiator and coordinator of the EU project TECHNEAU. This project was launched in January, with a total budget of EUR 19 million, and focuses on new knowledge and innovation for safe, reliable drinking water supplies. Earlier EU projects Kiwa Water Research participates in are TOXIC (research programme on the hazards of cyanobacteria) and MICRORISK (research programme concerned with a harmonized quantitative method for the risk analysis of microbiological drinking water quality).
National (Dutch) networks
Kiwa Water Research actively participates in knowledge networks in the , such as Delft Cluster which also comprises GeoDelft, WL Delft Hydraulics,
TNO
Building and Construction Research, TNO Institute of Applied Geoscience - National Geological Survey (TNO NITG), Delft University of Technology and UNESCO’s International Institute for Infrastructural, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering in
Delft (UNESCO-IHE). It also co-operates with the Foundation for Applied Research in Water Management (STOWA), Rioned (Sewage Systems in the ) and RIZA (Institute for Inland Water Management and Waste Water Treatment)). Kiwa Water Research also maintains bilateral joint ventures with various partners, including Delft University of Technology, the Free University of Amsterdam,
Wageningen
University and Research Centre, the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection (RIVM), the Netherlands Forestry Commission, consulting engineering companies and dozens of companies and organizations participating in the ’ Water Partnership NWP.
