Strategy development for improved flood protection & flood risk reduction, the Timis River, Romania

In 1997, 1999, 2000, 2005 and 2006 flood events occurred in the Timis basin in West-Romania. An analysis was made to what extend flood management could be improved in the Timis basin. This resulted in an inception report, in which the following activities (carried out by HKV LIJN IN WATER, RIZA and the Banat Water Directorate) are described:

  • System analysis and development of a hydraulic model in order to understand and simulate flood situations.
  • Training and development of flood risk and hazard maps according to the EU flood directive.
  • Training and analysis of the safety chain in order to improve the processes before, during and after floods. A large-scale flood disaster exercise is organized including mayors, representatives of the Banat Administration, the Banat Water Directorate, etc.
  • Training, analysis and development of flood protection strategies. A study tour in the Netherlands is organized in order to demonstrate the Dutch “Room for Rivers” strategy.
