Duver coast protection, Isle of Wight (UK)
Duver coast protection, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom
This award winning coast protection scheme involves a cooperation between an artist (John Maine), an environmental consultant (ECOSA) and Royal Haskoning. The scheme also involved the enhancement of the existing adjacent lagoon areas, creating the Alan Hersey Nature Reserve.
Providing a coastal defence is the primary purpose of a project like this. However, the development of the project also paid close attention to those who would ultimately use the area, both human and wildlife, with the evolution of the design taking these elements into account.
This has resulted in a scheme that has been widely acknowledged as a success, by the general public, local residents, environmental bodies and the Council.
The project won the NCE/ACE Consultants of the Year Outstanding Achievement Award in 2005 and the Jo Mitchell Conservation Award from the Isle of Wight Council in 2003.
Royal Haskoning undertook preliminary investigation work, the Defra Project Appraisal Report, Environmental Impact Assessment, detailed design, contract administration and site supervision of this coast protection scheme. Significant consultation was undertaken with the environmental agencies and the public throughout the development of the project as the scheme is located in an environmentally sensitive area, carrying Ramsar, SPA, and SSSI designations.
